Love that list Paul! Can I quote you? I'm just glad there are HR pros out there like Paul who get why asking for FB passwords is such a bad idea generally. Have any of you considered asking applicants for passwords? Or, more likely, have any of …

Welcome to the forum! For just a little clarification: Are you asking for feedback on the website as a whole or the Employer's Forum? I'm a bit biased on both subjects, but I will say I think we have a great group of posters here on the forum. I'…

My boyfriend doesn't have a Facebook page. Does that mean he fails the test? I would think for a lot of employers, that could mean extra credit. After all, it shows that he doesn't get distracted by these crazy computer "fads" -- and at the very le…

Coffee, Just heard back from IT. Permissions have been adjusted so that everyone can start a poll now. Celeste

Coffee -- I'll check with our IT dept and see what the difference is.

I'm not sure about our maternity leave but I wanted to chime in about how to create a poll. It's easy to miss. When you are creating a post, under the box where you write your text, there are several smaller boxes under "Additional Options." The ne…

I've been invited to participate in pools/brackets/squares in the past, but I'm pretty terrible at sports so I usually opt out. Fun fact: When I was in high school, I loved college basketball. A friend and I went in together on a $20 bracket pool …

To wipe a device remotely, do you have to install something on it? Some sort of portal that gives you that access? Otherwise, it seems like you could wipe anybody's device at any time. From what I've read, this is the biggest issue with letting e…

Sonny, you make a good point. One of my colleagues is fond of saying "Words mean things, people!" Those two words aren't interchangable. The original article focused on leaders that are maniuplative and don't care who they hurt. And looking at it …

Nae, You are right. I figured everyone's worked for a weasel (is there anybody out there who has avoided that?) but have you ever had a boss that is actually psychotic. Luckily, I think I've avoided the psychotics.

Now the White House is on the "don't discriminate against the unemployed" train. Just read an article in the New York Times talking about how Obama's jobs bill would make it “an unlawful employment practice” for a business with 15 or more emp…

Interesting article Sharon. It brings up so many questions. What e-mail system does Yahoo use? Are employees using Yahoo e-mail or do they pay someone else/use different software? What sort of e-mail policy does this media giant -- whose e-mail syst…
I don't have stats but I would hazard to guess that minorities are unemployed in higher rates than non-minorities. Therefore, a policy which excludes the unemployed from consideration will exclude minorities in gr…

You are right Frank. Just so you know, Schickman knows his Shakespeare. In his column he corrected the common misinterpretation of "First, let's kill all the lawyers." :
"Nobody remembers that it was uttered as part of a conspiracy among k…

Mark Schickman used this movie as the inspiration for his latest column (if you have access to California Employment Law Letter, check out "First thing, let's kill all the . . . bosses"). His point is that workplace violence isn't really funny (and …

Just finished reading a blog post from Molly DiBianca about another employee fired for a tweet. A social-media "specialist" with an agency that receives public funding tweeted:
We start summer hours toda…

I've written about this issue on our Technology for HR blog. Here is a post that may help you out: Off-Duty Employee Blogging: Business Concern or None of Your Business? Have you had an employee come to you asking if it's OK to start a personal bl…

tdanneberger -- I hate to see you ask a question and get no answers . . . so at the risk of being too "self-promotional," here is a list of the great training products offered by HR Hero that may be of use to you: there are [URL="http://store.hrher…

You could make it the Winning, Duh Award (or is the Charlie Sheen thing so two weeks ago?)

I put together an article for this week's Hero Line about ways you can ease the burden of rising gas prices for employees even if you can't offer telecommuting. My favorite idea of the bunch is calling around to other companies near you to set up a…

Alas, it is not. I'll mention it to Vincent. Maybe he can work it into the Droid App.

For the most part, it's good news for employers. Check out an analysis of the regulations’ key provisions and what they mean for you…

I am FB friends with Paul and kept my eye on his posts. I was really impressed with how he was able to use FB to keep employees and others up to date with what was going on. Watching Paul's posts and the comments on them, it also occurred to me th…

I guess it is a bit far-fetched to think any of you may have encountered someone as out there as Charlie. As an employee who has never worked in the HR department or as a manager or supervisor, I do wonder how you deal with the difficult "star" e…

Ha! I hate to break it to you, but Tony is not like Charlie (two completely different kinds of winning).
