Grassroots movement?

I came across an interesting article about fast food workers. You can read the article here.

In a nutshell, the workers are pushing for a $15-an-hour minimum wage and plan to walk off the job in 100 cities this Thursday. This isn't he first time they've staged such a protest and probably won't be the last.

My question is this ...

Is this really a grass roots movement and/or the product of social justice groups as the article describes? You see, I thought social justice groups had more to do with civil rights, immigration rights, criminal justice, disability rights, elder advocacy, etc. I can't quite make the leap from that to labor organizing. Is some other organization pulling strings behind the scenes? Do we need to dust off and maybe revamp our union avoidance training?

Your thoughts?

Sharon
