Today I'll be laying off about 50 ee's. Two weeks ago while I was on vacation in MN, the land of 10,000 drunks according to Larry, we let go about 50 temps who were expecting it. Next month there will be another 10 or so. Of course rumors have been flying so people have been avoiding me for the past two weeks. The one bright spot, another electronics manufacturer 5 miles from us will be on our site recruiting, so some of these people should find new jobs very quickly.

We are going through the same thing here and it could reach pretty deep. It ain't fun.

Things aren't any better in the solar system either. Pluto, after all these years of hard work dragging tail for the rest of the planets, has now been layed off. Where's the justice?

That is too bad. Sorry to hear about layoffs. They are hard for everyone involved. 6 years ago my company closed due to being sold and it wasn't fun being on unemployment. BUT, it did open up an opportunity for me that I might not have had if not laid off. Keep that in mind when you are laying staff off!! Good luck!

I may have some "opportunities open up" for me too, if our cuts any closer. We're all walking on eggs. This is no way to live.

The rumors and waiting are the worst - just rip the band-aid off and be done with it. Give us an update when you get back, Ray. Glad you're able to give them an opportunity, though - hopefully that will soften it for some.

ugggh! That sucks, Ray. I had to go to Savannah one time to close down a call center. Got a ticket on my way down there, too. Fitting.
You know this, but if you treat them with dignity and give them some resources to continue, it will be a somewhat easier pill to swallow. I hope you get thru the day with as little pain as possible.

Whew!!!!! All done. A few tears and some anger, but most took it well. One rumor was we absolutely refused to allow a pregnant woman call for a ride and FORCED her to walk home in the rain. I'm cruel sometimes, but not that cruel.

Larry, I really hope you don't have a day like this.

Sorry you guys are going through this. I used to work in a resort town where we hired 1000 employees at the start of every summer and had to lay them all off in the fall. Some were students returning to school, but many wanted to keep their jobs throughout the winter.

It seems the rumors just make things harder for everyone.

Lay-offs are the toughest thing in HR to do. I hope the people who got the ax find work soon. I will be praying for them, and for you too as it is a really tough spot to be in.
